What it really costs to publish a book in 2026, with the numbers
Editing, cover, interior, ISBNs, distribution: what each piece costs on the open market in the United States and in Spain, and what you can safely skip.
Most "how much does it cost to publish" pages are written by someone who wants to sell you the answer. This one is written by a press that publishes its own books with the same suppliers you would use. The figures below are open-market prices in October 2026, with the source for each, so you can check them yourself. Where a price moves, we say so.
One framing before the numbers. A book has four costs: making the text good, making the object good, registering it, and getting it into shops. Only the first two are where you should spend money. The third is cheap. The fourth is almost free now.
1. Making the text good
Editing is the expensive part, and the part most first-time authors skip. It is also the part readers notice. There are three different jobs, and a good editor will tell you which one your manuscript needs.
| Service | What it is | United States (USD) | Spain (EUR) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Developmental editing | Structure, argument, what is missing, what should go. The editor reads the whole book and writes you a report, then works through it with you. | $0.026-0.053 per word. About $1,900-3,900 for 75,000 words. | Rare as a separate service. Usually bundled into "corrección de estilo" or sold as a reading report, €300-900. |
| Copy editing / corrección de estilo | Sentence by sentence: clarity, repetition, tone, consistency. | $0.020-0.032 per word. About $1,500-2,400. | €1.20-1.70 per 1,000 characters. About €450-650 for 75,000 words. |
| Proofreading / corrección ortotipográfica | The last pass: typos, punctuation, spacing, page layout errors. | $0.014-0.021 per word. About $1,000-1,600. | €0.80-1.15 per 1,000 characters. About €300-430. |

Notice the gap. The same copy edit costs three to four times more in dollars than in euros. That is not because American editors are better. It is because the markets are different. If you write in Spanish, hire in Spain or Latin America. If you write in English, the Reedsy range is honest; the people charging $0.10 per word on their own websites are charging for the website.
What you can skip: nothing here, if the book matters to you. What you can reduce: if your manuscript is already clean, a developmental report plus a proofread can replace three separate passes. Ask the editor. A good one will tell you when you do not need them.
2. Making the object good
| Item | United States (USD) | Spain (EUR) | Can you do it yourself? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cover design, custom | $300-1,000 | €150-800 | Yes, but it shows. The cover is the only part of your book most people will ever see. |
| Interior layout, print and ebook | $300-800 by a designer. About $250 once for Vellum (Mac), then free. | €150-400 | Yes, with Vellum or Atticus, if you are patient. Nonfiction with tables, notes and figures is harder than a novel. |
| Barcode | $25 at Bowker, free elsewhere | Free | Yes. Never pay $25 for a barcode. |
Vellum is the one tool we recommend buying. It is a one-off price, and you will use it for every book and every reprint for years.
3. Registering it
This is where vanity presses make their margin, because the real prices are small and most authors do not know them.
| Item | United States | Spain |
|---|---|---|
| ISBN | Bowker: $125 for one, $295 for ten, $575 for a hundred. A free one from KDP exists, but then Amazon is the publisher of record. | Agencia del ISBN: €45 per edition for an author-publisher; €95 for a block of ten if you register as a publisher (€140 the first time). |
| Copyright registration | $45 online, single author, single work. Optional: copyright exists the moment you write. Registration matters only if you ever need to sue. | Not required. Registro de la Propiedad Intelectual is optional, about €14-20. |
| Library of Congress number (LCCN) | Free, through the PCN program. Needs a U.S. address and must be requested before publication. | Depósito legal: free, mandatory for printed books distributed in Spain. Your printer usually handles it. |
Count it: a Spanish author with one book needs €45. An American author who wants to own the ISBN and register copyright needs $170. Anyone quoting you hundreds of dollars for "registration services" is reselling these.
What you can skip: the barcode fee, copyright registration unless you expect litigation, and any "premium" ISBN package. What you should not skip: owning your ISBN if you ever want the book in shops under your own name.
4. Getting it into shops
This is the part that changed most in the last five years. Print-on-demand means you pay nothing upfront; the printer takes its cost out of each sale.
| Channel | Upfront | Per copy sold (6×9 paperback, 300 pages, black ink) | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon KDP | $0 | Printing $4.60 ($1.00 + $0.012 per page) | 60% of list price minus printing. At $16.99: about $5.59. |
| IngramSpark (bookshops, libraries, Barnes & Noble, Casa del Libro) | $0. Setup and revisions free since February 2026. | Printing about $3.50-3.70, plus 1.875% of list price | List price minus the shop's discount (you set it, 40-55%) minus printing. |
Use both. KDP for Amazon, Ingram for everyone else. Do not enrol a KDP paperback in "Expanded Distribution"; it uses Ingram anyway, at a worse rate.
What a serious book costs, then
Adding it up for a 75,000-word nonfiction book, professionally edited, designed and registered, with no money left on the table:
| United States | Spain | |
|---|---|---|
| Lean (developmental report, proofread, custom cover, DIY layout, own ISBN) | $3,000-4,500 | €900-1,500 |
| Full (three editing passes, custom cover, designer layout, ISBN, copyright) | $6,000-9,000 | €1,800-3,200 |
Anything cheaper than the lean figure is skipping editing. Anything much above the full figure is paying for something that is not the book: a "launch package", "marketing", a logo on the spine. Ask what, exactly.
For comparison, our own packages are public on the pricing page. They sit inside the full range above, in dollars, with the editing done by the same person who runs the press. We put them there so you can compare, not so you have to ask.

From first line to published book
The cheapest money you will spend on a book is the money you do not have to spend fixing it later. These three short guides cover the decisions that come first: what book it is, how to write it with rigor and how to take it to print.
